Afterlight
A different kind of portfolio review.
The first time we look at our photographs, we often see individual images. We think about composition, light, timing, technique or whether a photograph is “good.” It is only later, sometimes months or even years later that something deeper begins to emerge. We start to notice recurring themes, familiar gestures, questions that keep returning, and stories that have quietly been unfolding across different projects, cameras and moments in our lives.
That is where Afterlight begins.
Looking beyond the photograph.
Afterlight is not about grading your work or telling you how to become a better photographer. It is an artist-to-artist conversation designed to help you better understand the work you have already been making.
Together we will slow down and look beyond individual images. We’ll explore the relationships between photographs, the patterns running through your archive, the stories that are beginning to take shape and the ideas that may already be asking for a book, a zine, an exhibition or another form entirely.
My role is not to tell you what your work should become. My role is to help you recognize what it has already been becoming.
Photography is rarely about a single image.
Over time I have come to believe that photographs often know before photographers do. Long before we can explain our interests or define our artistic voice, our images begin leaving clues. Certain places call us back. Certain people keep appearing. The same light, colours, emotions or questions return again and again.
Seen individually, these photographs may seem unrelated. Seen together, they begin to form a language.
Afterlight is an invitation to read that language with fresh eyes.
What we’ll explore together.
Every conversation is different because every photographer brings a different body of work and a different relationship to it. Some people arrive with a finished project, others with decades of archives, and many simply arrive with the feeling that there is something important hidden inside their photographs but they can not immediately find it.
Together we might explore recurring themes, sequencing, editing, project development, publishing possibilities, unfinished ideas, long-term artistic direction or the stories that have quietly been growing beneath the surface of your work.
The goal is not to leave with all the answers. The goal is to leave with better questions, greater clarity and a deeper trust in your own way of seeing.
More conversation than critique.
Sharing your photographs requires vulnerability. Because of that, I believe every portfolio review should begin with curiosity rather than criticism.
I won’t sit across from you as a judge deciding what works and what doesn’t. Instead, we’ll sit beside each other and look carefully together. I’ll challenge assumptions when necessary, point out connections you may not have noticed and offer honest feedback when something isn’t serving the work. But above all, I want you to leave with a stronger relationship to your own photographs, not to my opinions.
An optional third voice.
At the end of the session, I can draw a single tarot card. Not as a prediction or a verdict, but as another perspective. The photographer has a voice. The photographs have a voice. Sometimes a third voice helps us ask a question we hadn’t considered before. Whether you see that as intuition, symbolism or simply an invitation to reflect is entirely up to you.
About ZOTEYE.
I am a documentary photographer and multidisciplinary artist based in Berlin. My practice moves between photography, books, publishing, film, sound and conversation, but at its core it is always about witnessing. I believe that every story eventually reveals the form it needs, and that photographs often carry meaning long before we are able to explain why we made them.
Afterlight grows directly from that belief. It is an extension of my documentary practice and an invitation to spend time with your work in a slower, more attentive way.
