Beyond Editorial
Your documentary practice can exist beyond journalism.A two-day live online workshop for documentary photographers who want to translate the way they already see, photograph and tell stories into commercial commissions, without becoming a different kind of photographer.
8 hours · 2 days · Live online · Maximum 24 photographers
Four international editions · September–December 2026
YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW TO DO THE DIFFICULT PART.
You know how to observe.
You know how to enter a space and understand what is happening.
You know how to work with people, uncertainty, available light, real environments and moments you cannot repeat.
You know how to build trust.
You know how to tell stories.
You know how to photograph what is actually there.
But knowing how to make documentary photographs and knowing how to make a sustainable living from documentary photography are two very different things. For many photographers, editorial and journalistic commissions are becoming harder to find, budgets are shrinking, and personal work alone rarely pays the bills.
Commercial photography can look like another universe.
It isn’t.
Companies, organisations, institutions and brands need photographers who can tell real stories about real people, places, processes and communities.
They need documentary photographers.
The problem is that many documentary photographers have never learned how to translate what they already know into a language the commercial world understands.
That is what Beyond Editorial is about.
THE WORKING DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHER
WHO IS THIS FOR?
Beyond Editorial is for documentary photographers, photojournalists and visual storytellers who recognise some version of this:
You make personal documentary work but struggle to make it financially sustainable.
You work editorially or journalistically, but commissions and budgets are no longer enough.
You want to approach companies but don’t know which companies actually need your photography.
You don’t know whether personal and commercial work belong on the same website.
You don’t know what a commercial client needs to see in your portfolio.
You have no idea who inside a company actually hires photographers.
You hate the idea of turning yourself into a salesperson.
You don’t know how to price commercial work, negotiate usage or respond when somebody asks for a quote.
Or perhaps you simply know:
I need another way to make this practice sustainable.
You do not need to abandon documentary photography.
You need to understand where else it can live.
From practice to commission.
Beyond Editorial happens live over two days. Each day consists of two two-hour sessions with a one-hour break between them. 4 hours of workshop time per day. 8 hours together in total.
This is deliberately not a pre-recorded course. We’re going to be in the room together. There will be questions.
Conversations. Photographs. Portfolios. Websites.
Real examples. Actual commercial situations.
Things that worked. Things that spectacularly didn’t.
And plenty of room for the questions that don’t fit neatly onto a slide.
That’s why every edition is limited to 24 photographers.
Day One.
What you already have.
-
Your documentary practice already contains skills that commercial clients need: observation, trust, adaptability, storytelling and the ability to work with real people in real environments. We’ll look at how to recognise the value in the way you already work instead of trying to imitate conventional advertising photography. The goal is not to become someone else, but to understand where your existing photographic language can live.
-
Who hires photographers, who influences the decision, and what actually happens once your work lands inside a company or agency? We’ll look at the people, structures and processes behind commercial commissions, from marketing and communication teams to creative directors, producers and agencies. Understanding the other side of the table makes the whole world of commercial photography much less mysterious.
-
Your archive may already contain the beginnings of a commercial portfolio. We’ll look at your documentary work differently and identify the skills, environments and stories it proves you can handle. Instead of changing your photography, we’ll learn how to translate its value so that a potential client can understand what you could make for them.
-
A good portfolio is not simply a collection of your strongest photographs. It needs to help someone quickly understand who you are, what you see and what they could commission you to do. We’ll look at websites, project selection, sequencing, personal versus commissioned work, PDF portfolios and the information that helps turn interest into confidence.
Day Two.
Building the machine.
-
Not every company is the right client for every photographer. We’ll look at how to identify industries, organisations and people where your specific documentary language makes sense, and how to research them properly. The goal is to build a focused prospecting practice rather than sending generic emails into the void.
-
What happens after somebody is interested in your work? We’ll walk through the path from first contact to confirmed commission: conversations, briefs, treatments, estimates, budgets, tenders, procurement, usage, negotiation and all the questions you need to ask before saying yes. We’ll also deal with one of the hardest parts for many photographers: talking about money without collapsing into panic.
-
A commercial assignment still needs to feel like your work. We’ll look at how to photograph real people, workplaces, events and environments while balancing your own instincts with a client’s needs and sometimes even shareholders expectations. This chapter is about protecting the honesty and responsiveness of documentary photography even when there is a brief, a deadline and somebody waiting for the result which is more than a document but usually a conversion into revenue or marketshare.
-
Making the photographs is only part of the job. We’ll cover editing, client selections, file preparation, delivery, usage, invoicing and follow-up, and then look at what turns a successful assignment into a lasting relationship. The aim is not to constantly start from zero, but to become someone clients want to work with again.
THEN WE BUILD YOUR 2027 PLAN.
I don’t want you leaving Beyond Editorial with 74 pages of notes and a warm feeling.
I want you to leave knowing what happens next.
What do you offer?
Which parts of your existing portfolio support it?
What needs to change?
Which industries fit your photography?
Which organisations could need what you do?
Who are the people you need to reach?
What are you going to charge?
What happens in the next 30 days?
I WANT YOU TO ENTER 2027 WITH A STRATEGY FOR MAKING YOUR DOCUMENTARY PRACTICE ECONOMICALLY STRONGER.
WHY AM I HOSTING THIS WORKSHOP?
I have been a documentary photographer from the beginning.
Documentary isn’t a category of photography I sometimes work in.
It is how I approach photography.
I’ve brought that way of seeing into personal projects, portraits, music, aviation, industry, events and assignments for organisations ranging from tiny businesses to clients including Brussels Airport, Lufthansa and Live Nation.
But I’ve also spent years sitting on the other side of the table.
For five years, I worked inside Belgium’s largest telecommunications company, overseeing photography with an annual photography budget of approximately €250,000.
I commissioned photographers and agencies and worked with around 15 different agencies using photography across advertising, direct marketing, digital communication and other commercial applications.
I’ve been the photographer wondering how to get hired.
And I’ve been the person deciding which photographer gets hired.
Beyond Editorial brings those two experiences together.
Four rooms.
Four parts of the world.
Beyond Editorial runs four times before the end of 2026.
Same workshop. Different time zones.
Each edition is timed for a different part of the world. Choose the one that works best for you.

9 + 10 JANUARY 2027
Maximum 10 photographers.
Each photographer brings:
THREE PHOTOGRAPHS.
Not thirty. Not an entire career.
Three.
Enough to look closely. Enough to talk seriously. Enough to begin understanding what those photographs communicate to people who weren’t there when you made them. Across two days we’ll spend approximately 24 minutes with each photographer’s work, with everyone present for the conversations. That means you don’t only learn from the conversation around your own photographs. You participate in nineteen others. 8 hours of group review across two days, plus breaks.
This level is limited to 10 people in the 2026 programme.
€275
Access shouldn’t depend entirely on money.
I know who I’m making this workshop for.
And I know that some documentary photographers who could benefit most from learning another way of earning money are precisely the people for whom €125 isn’t easy right now.
So a small number of reduced-price places will be available for every Beyond Editorial edition and one free seat.
You don’t need to send me bank statements.
You don’t need to prove that you’re struggling.
You don’t need to perform poverty for access to knowledge.
If money is the reason you cannot join, write to me:
zoteyeatsunrise@gmail.com
And then we don’t just disappear.
Everyone who joins Beyond Editorial receives:
THREE MONTHS COMPLIMENTARY ACCESS TO MY PATREON COMMUNITY.
Because I don’t particularly believe in workshops where everybody spends a weekend together, closes Zoom on Sunday and disappears from each other’s lives.
Building a sustainable practice takes longer than a weekend.
Photography changes.
The industry changes.
Technology changes.
Your work changes.
And sometimes you simply need somewhere to return with:
“Okay. I tried it. This happened. What now?”
Think of Beyond Editorial as the beginning of that conversation rather than its end.
A Note About AIThe world photography exists inside is changing quickly. Generative AI. Synthetic imagery. Shrinking editorial budgets. Changing platforms. Questions around authorship. Algorithms. Visibility. The economics of creative work. We’re not going to pretend none of this is happening. But Beyond Editorial is also not an AI workshop. The question here is more immediate: What remains valuable about being a photographer who actually goes somewhere? Someone who meets people. Enters spaces. Builds trust. Observes. Waits. Responds. And makes photographs from something that actually happened. I believe that ability still has enormous value.
Beyond Editorial is partly about learning how to make that value visible.
THIS IS NOT A WORKSHOP ABOUT BECOMING SOMEONE ELSE.
I don’t want to teach documentary photographers how to imitate advertising photography.
I don’t want you to erase the strange, difficult, personal work that made you a photographer in the first place.
And I definitely don’t want photographers leaving this workshop with identical portfolios and identical emails.
The point is almost the opposite.
Your way of seeing is valuable.
Your history is valuable.
Your obsessions are valuable.
The environments you understand are valuable.
The way people behave around you is valuable.
The photographs only you seem to notice are valuable.
The question is: WHERE ELSE COULD THAT WAY OF SEEING LIVE?
